WIDPSC 2012: Glittering Team Hong Kong effort with Lucien Wang crowned World Champion for Interpretive Reading
The World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships have just concluded in Brisbane, Australia, with Team Hong Kong returning a set of outstanding results.
The team of Brian Wong (Island School), Esther Mak (St. Paul’s Co-ed), Justin Lee (Shatin College), Claudia Tam (West Island School), Lucien Wang (KGV), Eunice Leung (Maryknoll Convent School), Ryan Tang (St Paul’s Co-ed) and Sarah Ku (Heep Yunn School) traveled to Australia to compete in four speaking disciplines: Persuasive Speaking, Impromptu Speaking, Interpretive Reading and Debating.
Lucien won the Interpretive Reading grand final and follows Heather Pickerell (2011 -Persuasive Speaking) as our second ever World Champion. A fantastic achievement!
Lucien did the Room 101 section from George Orwell’s classic dystopian novel ’1984′. Coach, Mr Roy Allen noted that Lucien: “managed to match Richard Burton for power and creepiness. It was done in a large Lecture Theatre and he did very well to project the voice and create a sense of fear… he got better each time he did it.”
After the preliminary rounds, several students finished in the top ten, earning them the right to compete in the “finals”. Only the top two (four for debating) contest the “grand final”. Reaching the finals is a major achievement in itself – congratulations!
Esther came 3rd in the final and was 1st overall in the preliminary rankings for Persuasive. Brilliant effort!
Justin and Ryan also made the Persuasive final. Claudia also made the reading final, Eunice the debating final and Justin the impromptu final. All amazing results!

Regarding the top 50 rankings of each category – here is the team summary:
In the overall rankings, all 8 members of the team came in the top 50.
In the persuasive category, all 8 members of the team came in the top 30.
In the impromptu category, all 8 members of the team came in the top 40.
Big thanks are due to team mentors: Roy Allen (coach) and Steven Lee (manager) who took the team to the championships after many, many hours of work. Alumni like Ben Allen are also to be thanked for giving the time to make this team a most successful one, even more meritorious given it was probably our youngest ever team Hong Kong.

CHINESE INTERNATIONAL TAKE 5TH HKSDC JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
Click here for team and speaker rankings from the tournament and
here for some amazing photos taken by Denise Wong of GSIS – thanks!
The 5th Junior Hong Kong Schools Debating Championship was held on the 17th March 2012 at Canadian International School. 24 teams from 23 schools in Hong Kong participated, with each team consisting of 3-5 members and debates were in Worlds Style.
Chinese International School, German Swiss International School, South Island School and Diocesan Boys School broke into the semi-finals, debating the motion THW allow parents to access the social networking sites of their children.
CIS and GSIS defeated their opponents and went on to debate the motion THW ban the use of animals in sport and entertainment in the Grand Finals, with CIS picking up the Champions trophy, defeating a gallant GSIS.
Queenie Fung, who debated superbly throughout the tournament for Heep Yunn School, was crowned “Best Speaker”.
In an innovation for HKSDC, three “New Speaker Awards” were handed out to Bianca Chan (Maryknoll Convent School), Arnesh Batlaw (HKIS) and Alex Yeung (DBS). This award is for debaters who have never before participated an HKSDC tournament and is designed to encourage all new debaters to take part and aim to achieve at the top level.
La Salle maintain dominance in Senior HKSDC Debating, taking 3rd crown in four finals
