World Scholars Cup Hong Kong Round 2012

The World Scholars Cup Hong Kong Round is now set for Saturday May 19th 2012 at South Island School. It will be run as a joint WSC/HKSDC/SIS venture to establish the first event. Next year another school is expected to host, so please give this some thought as you participate in the inaugural WSC.

Contact Daniel Berdichevsky and Zac Ellington for details about how to register a team. Visit: http://www.scholarscup.org/ to get an outline of the event and the themes to be explored.

Further details about registration are:

1. Teams register by submitting a registration form found on the World Scholar’s Cup website. They email that form to contact@scholarscup.org, and we input the team data into an online roster. Additionally, any questions can emailed to hongkong@scholarscup.org.

2. At the regional round, teams participate in four events, which are described in the viewbook and online: Debate, Writing, Challenge, and Bowl. To prepare, teams should explore the briefing packets for each area at www.scholarscup.org/forms, then practice debating and discussing the topics. Often, on a team of three, each student selects different areas to explore.

3. The best links to include would probably be the WSC website (www.scholarscup.org), the viewbook (http://db.tt/yfM3SS78) and our three-minute introductory video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuyHiXBB7jE).

WSDC 2013 – Selection for HK Squad

Dear coaches, debaters and friends of HKSDC,

I am pleased to announce the selection trials for the next WSDC HK team that will compete in WSDC 2013 in Turkey Jan 25 – Feb 6 2013.

It is important that coaches understand that they send only debaters of very good – high standard to the trials as this is not one of those events where you just send anyone “for the experience”.

From the initial trial we will select a squad of 12 debaters who will then undergo two month’s intensive training before being cut to the final 5 debaters to go to Turkey. These 5 will then train regularly until the championships.

Any applicant must apply personally via email to hongkongsdc@gmail.com once they have gained certain approvals listed below. Each applicant must supply a one page CV of their general experience in debating and the Worlds style in particular. From these CVs we will be inviting those debaters who we note have the necessary background to enter the first trial.

Please understand that any applicant must satisfy the following conditions.

  1. Be 14 years of age when the tournament begins.
  2. Have the approval of parents (please take into account exam clashes).
  3. Have the approval of their school (please take into account exam clashes).
  4. Be able to meet the cost of the trip – approximately $18000.
  5. Be prepared for 10 months of intensive training.
  6. Have significant experience in debating at a senior level.

Date of trial: Friday March 9th
Location: TBA
Time: 5-9pm
Applications close: Monday March 5th

I look forward to receiving the applications with one page CV before March 5th.

Regards:
Michael Evershed (HKSDC Chair)

[RESULTS] 4th Junior HKSDC November 2011

German Swiss sweep awards at Junior HKSDC Tournament with a win over a gallant Chinese International in the final. Amanda Sin picks up Best Speaker trophy.

The fourth Junior Hong Kong Schools Debating Championship was held on the 19th November 2011 at the Independent Schools Foundation Academy in Pokfulam. 22 teams from 21 schools in Hong Kong participated, with each team consisting of 3-5 members. Debates were in World Schools Style.

German Swiss International School, Chinese International, St. Paul’s Co-ed and South Island School 1, broke into the semi-finals, debating the motion This House believes that the Olympic spirit is dead.

GSIS and CIS defeated their opponents and went on to debate the motion This house believes that the internet has improved the quality of teenage life in the Grand Final, with GSIS being crowned champion of the Junior HKSDC November 2011 tournament in a fascinating debate that see-sawed throughout. CIS were gallant in defeat and received the Runner-Up trophy.

Also, congratulations to Amanda Sin of GSIS for winning the best speaker award calculated as the highest average over at least 2 debates in the preliminary rounds.

The sixth Hong Kong Schools Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championship was held on the 26th of November, 2011, at La Salle College in Kowloon. A group of 20 very talented students from 13 schools in Hong Kong contested the event in four categories: debating, interpretive reading, persuasive speaking and impromptu speaking.

Every student presented their speeches and readings with poise and polish. The standard was extremely high, and every single contestant can feel proud of their work, no matter what the ranking. It must be remembered that to even compete on the day is already a significant achievement, and the experience will stand the students in good stead as they develop their public speaking skills going forward.

Brian Wong from Island School cleared out from the pack to win by a margin of 12 points from his nearest rival. He gave lively performances in all four disciplines with a unique style of energy, articulation and humour. A bright future beckons for this year 10 whizz-kid whose ability to engage an audience was very clear to all the judges on Saturday.
