Greetings!

Would you like to have some Spring Festival Debate Fun in the City of the Panda, Chengdu, China, in February 2012?

On behalf of the Organising Committee, I would like to invite you to send World Schools Teams ( 3 debaters in a team) to participate in the 1st Chengdu High School Debate Open (CDHDO) 2012.

Please kindly forward this email to anyone you may think would be interested or contact your fellow debaters/teachers from your part of the world to come and register with us.

The details of event are below:

1. Dates: 1st, 2nd and 3rd February 2012
2. Venue: Downtown Chengdu High School (location being finalised now)
3. Debate Format: World Schools’ Debating Championship (WSDC) Style ( 8 mins Speeches, 4 mins Reply Speeches)
4. Debate Rounds: 8 Preliminary Rounds, Octo-Finals, Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals, Grand Final
5. Social Event: Break Night Chinese Style Dinner Party on 2nd February 2012
6. Debate Motions/Preparation: 15 debate motions will be sent to all the registered teams 2 weeks before 1st Feb for them to research and prepare their cases. All debate teams will be given 30 minutes to prepare their side of the debate after the match-ups are released. One of the 15 debate motions, sent earlier to all the teams, will be debated in each debate round.
7. Tabulation/Ranking of Teams: Teams are power-matched from Preliminary Round 2 and will be ranked 1st to 16th based on: a) win/loss records, b) total speakers’ scores, and c) margins of wins.
8. Adjudication Team: The Chief Adjudicator is Loke Wing Fatt. The DCAs will be announced in due course. All 16 judges will be specially selected for their adjudication competence, fairness and ability to given constructive feedback for debate teams to improve.
9. Registration Fee per Debater: 800RMB ( includes lunch for 3 days, but excludes hotel accommodation. The registration fee may be reduced if sponsors are secured. This project is a non-profit debate education venture and the registration fees are collected to cover the costs of holding the event and no commercial profit is obtained by anyone involved in this voluntary effort)

Dear Asian debate community,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to Asian Schools Debate Championship 2011: Seoul. On its third year, ASDC is the only continental high school debate tournament in Asia. Hopefully, it is the first of many to follow.

From diligently developing a local debate community to launching delegations to international tournaments, the Asian debate community has becoming more and more vibrant over the years. But while the university circuit has had many tournaments to further regional discourse, the high school community did not.

But we do now. It’s my hope that ASDC will be a hub for high school debaters all around Asia. I hope that this will not only be a tournament to see who is the best of Asia but also a place to exchange ideas. To the debaters, ASDC will provide insight into debate and how to lead their own respective debate communities. What they learn in Seoul will be spread to Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. The debaters will discuss the future of the Asian debate community and come together to lead the university circuit and their own nations in the future.

The tournament is significant for the lo- cal debate community as well. The Korean high school debate community is young, and it would benefit greatly from being in rounds with debaters and adjudicators from other countries. Being exposed to different styles and methods will mature Korean debaters and the community as a whole. And the presence of such a large tournament will raise the awareness of debating and help the local community receive external support.

But aside from the significance of the tournament itself and the positive effects it will have, I wish that this year’s ASDC could be a great experience for everyone: debaters, adjudicators, and observers. The ASDC 2011: Seoul Organizing Committee is doing its best to provide a memorable experience at affordable costs. We want to make this an epic tournament.

It is my pleasure to serve as convener for this prestigious tournament, and I hope to see all of you in Seoul this July!

Newsletter 1
Finance Letter

Late registration will be accepted until Tuesday 7th June.
Motions will be released 7th June but the draw may have to come out 1 day later.
Schools who have registered are requested to confirm whether the number of teams indicated below is correct.

Where schools are bringing two teams, Team 1 is assumed to be stronger for the purposes of the draw.
Schools that wish to bring another team need to notify tournament organizers – Mr. Evershed at hongkongsdc@gmail.com.
Team’s can have 4 debaters or 5. If you had just 3 you could get away with it at a pinch if you think the 3 can cope but there would be no back up if someone has to drop out.

The rough plan for the day is to run the first 3 debates without a break, starting with the impromptu. I know this puts pressure on the students but the day will be shorter as a result. Then we will have lunch, announce the semi-final break and friendlies, then roll onto the grand final. Hoping to get away by 4.30 this time.

Alternative forms of entertainment are being prepared for those waiting for the Grand Finals instead of an impromptu speech comp. More details to be released.

Eligibility : Junior Debaters – Years 7-9 (International Schools) / Forms 1-3 (Local Schools)

Debating Plan

Preliminary Rounds

Each team will have 3 debates consisting of :

• 2 prepared debates (Motions will be released before tournament)
• 1 impromptu debate (30 minute preparation time)

Semi-Final and Friendly Debates

Impromptu debates with 30 minutes preparation time.

• Semi-Final 1 : 1^st breaking team vs 4^th breaking team
• Semi-Final 2 : 2^nd breaking team vs 3^rd breaking team

Remaining teams have friendly debates on the same motion. Teams will be paired according to their rankings in the preliminary rounds so that they will debate against teams of similar abilities (ie. 5 vs 6, 7 vs 8) unless teams have already debated each other earlier.
Teams can mix and match team members, as the friendlies are designed to allow teams to give all team members a chance to debate.

Teams will get a minimum of 4 debates, the Grand Finalists will complete 5 debates.

Grand Final

The winners of the semi-finals will compete in the Grand Final, which will be an impromptu debate with 30 minute preparation time. The motion for the Grand Final will be released two weeks before the day of the tournament. The other debaters are expected to watch as members of the audience.

Event Details

1. Each team should consist of 3-5 team members. Only 3 participate in any debate, but all 5 can help in preparation.
2. All teams MUST be accompanied by a coach/adjudicator. This is a strict policy to ensure that all teams provide an adjudicator. For this tournament adjudicators can be senior students if they have WSDC debating experience or coaches
3. The tournament will be in the World Schools Format. Resources, including guides for debaters and adjudicators can be found at our resources page.
4. Each side will give 3 constructive speeches followed by a 4th reply speech by either 1st or 2nd speaker
5. Constructive speeches of 5 minutes (100 marks) are followed by 2 minute 30 second reply speech (50 marks
6. At least 2 Points of Information are expected to be offered by each member of team per speech, and each of the constructive speakers should take 2 between 1:00 and 5:00 minutes. No POIs should be given during the the first and last minutes, which is protected time signaled by the time keeper, or during the reply.
7. As per WSDC, no new material permitted at third or reply

9. Each school may only send 1 team. The organizers reserve the right to invite second teams or create swing teams to even up the number of teams.
10. Tournament Cap : 24 teams

Registration

The team cap of 24 teams will be processed on a first-come-first-serve basis with a waiting list for later applicants.
Schools will be granted 1 team but may indicate if they wish to register a second team. Schools wishing to register second teams will be given slots after first teams are allocated according to the order of application.

Teams must provide a judge who may be a senior students if they have WSDC debating experience or the school’s coaches. No judge, no entry.

This must then be followed up by sending an entry cheque of $400 made out to “South Island School” and posted to Mr. Michael Evershed, “The Hong Kong Schools Debating Council”, South Island School, 50 Nam Fung Road Aberdeen. This fee is to cover lunch, trophies and other costs associated with running the tournament.

Draw and motions will be released on Tuesday 7th June.

This year, the team will be managed by Ms Kay Deswani from Ying Wah College, and she will prepare the team in collaboration with Greg Forse and the HK National Team that will contest the WSDC tournament in Dundee, Scotland in August 2011. This is a unique opportunity to develop debating skills in the company of very experienced debaters and coaches as well as experience a great part of Europe.

Application criteria:

1. Development criteria – as this is a development team, applicants are restricted to current year 12/Form 5 students and below. This rule is in place as we want this team to be a development team for future WSDC/World’s style events.
2. Cost criteria – students will need to be able to meet the costs of the trip which is estimated to be approximately $18,000 HK. This is something students must discuss with parents before applying.
3. School approval criteria – applicants will need to have the approval of their school before the trial. Students will need to balance examinations with training in the lead up to the event.

This year, HMUN will continue its tradition of excellence and uphold its reputation as one of the finest Model UN conferences in the world. Our conference, staffed entirely by Harvard undergraduates, is unique among MUN conferences in the depth, breadth, and quality of its substantive debate. This year, we are proud to offer twenty-seven committees, ranging from an Ad-Hoc Summit on the Aftermath of the Japanese Earthquake to a joint cabinet simulating the Iran-Iraq War of 1979. Dear Sir/Madam,

On behalf of Li Po Chun United World College English Debate Club, we are pleased to invite you to the LPCUWC Invitational Debate Tournament 2011 on Sunday, April 3rd, 2011.

The tournament will consist of a series of rounds, the first two of which will be prepared, with motions released one week before the day of the tournament. The tournament will follow world’s style, and teams will consist of three students, all of whom will compete in each round.

The registration of teams begins at 8:30 am and teams are expected to arrive by 9:00 am. The day will begin promptly at 9:00 am with a short introduction and the allocation of rooms for the debaters.

All teams will compete in the first three rounds of the day, and later rounds will include friendly debates which will be organized for those teams that do not break. Awards will be presented at the end of the day.

The cost per individual attending will be $30 for lunch. The fee for lunch should be paid directly to the canteen manager.

Each team will be required to provide an adjudicator, who may be a student or a teacher with prior debate experience. This will be a good opportunity to give judging experience to aspiring adjudicators.

Dear Colleagues,

It is my great pleasure to extend to you an invitation to the 8th year of our annual international debate tournament, the Heart of Europe.
Our Heart of Europe Debating Tournament 2011 (HOEDT) will take place on July 10-15th in Olomouc, Czech Republic.
The key features of the tournament are as follows:

• WSDC Format
• Power Pairing
• 8 preliminary rounds (roughly half impromptu, half prepared)
• Octo-finals, Quarter-finals, Semi-finals (all impromtu), and the Grand final (prepared)
• Team cap of 60 teams
• Adjudicator panels of 3
• Social and Cultural activities
• Possibly a lecture or two
• Cultural diversity (nearly 20 countries participated last year)
• Fees 160/110/200 EUR (debater/judge/observer) – meals included

Since the tournament takes place about one month before the WSDC, this is a great opportunity to culminate your training efforts towards it. On the other hand, this tournament stands independently and this is only a suggestion for national teams. Any and all teams are welcome to this friendly tournament, including beginners, as long as they are able to debate in English.

Belonging to the traditional tournaments of Europe, HOEDT is organised by the Association of Debate Clubs of Olomouc Region, and has come a long way since the first tournament. We have constantly tried to enhance our tournament experience with each new follow-up tournament, and we will not deviate from this goal this year. As some of you may remember, this tournament used to be organised at the venue of a local prestigious high school, Gymnasium Hejcin. This year, however, we are taking a huge step forward by moving the tournament onto academic soil.

The Faculty of Science at the University of Palacky has agreed to host the competition this year and for the years to come. This provides us with one of the most modern venues in Olomouc, and I truly hope every participant will find this to their liking. The same University will also provide us with their best accommodation and meals. Internet connection and vegetarian dishes will be available.

Time allocation is as follows:

• Sunday 10th – arrival
• Monday 11th – 3 preliminary rounds
• Tuesday 12th – 3 preliminary rounds
• Wednesday 13th – 2 preliminary rounds
• Thursday 14th – octo-finals, quarter-finals, and semi-finals
• Tuesday 15th – Grand Final and departures

A draft schedule will be created as soon as the cultural and other activities have been confirmed. All participants are welcome to arrive on an earlier day and/or remain in the city after the tournament.

With respect to adjudication, the Organising Committee (ORGCOM) has invited George Yeoman to be the Chief Adjudicator for this year and he has gladly accepted. It is vital to point out that in order to ensure a quality competition, we strongly emphasize the necessity of having adjudication panels. In view of this, we will be requiring teams to bring more adjudicators than normal.

The registration process will be divided into three stages:

• Stage 1 (registration opens – middle of April)
  • only complete applications can be accepted
  • a cap of 3 teams per country will have to be applied
  • one slot per country is always reserved for the national team according to WSDC rules, otherwise
  • the principle of first come – first served will be applied
• Stage 2 (middle of April – end of May)
  • the team cap per country will be suspended
  • if viable, teams with too few adjudicators may be admitted (based on the number of registered independent judges)
  • slots can be booked for teams with incomplete registrations due to missing information (e.g. passport number)
• Stage 3 (end of May – end of June)
  • the completion of all required procedures and information
  • an ultimate decision concerning participation is required by undecided teams, within the registration process
  • teams without adjudicators may be admitted, if viable
  • if necessary, a deposit may be required (HOEDT fees will likely be requested on arrival in full, though, without prior deposits)

The registration requirements are as follows:

• Teams
  • teams may consist of at least 3 eligible debaters according to the rules (basically secondary or high school students or recent graduates who have not entered tertiary education facilities yet)
  • each team must be accompanied by an adult Team Manager who will bear responsibility for the behaviour of team members
  • a rule of n+1 is applied for adjudicators (adjudicators required = number of teams in a delegation + 1)
  • a completed registration form must be submitted to the registration officer
• Adjudicators (both team and independent)
  • a judging CV must be sent to the Chief Adjudicator
  • a completed registration form must be submitted to the registration officer
• Observers
  • a completed registration form must be submitted to the registration officer

All participants are obliged to uphold the Rules and Code of Ethics. Participants must have written consent with them on arrival – minors need to have the respective forms signed by their legal guardians prior to departure for the tournament. The form can be found at the end of the Code of Ethics.

Recommended dress code: business informal or adequate (other cultures).

The prepared motions will be announced as soon as the Motion Committee decides on which ones to use.

This year will be a stepping stone in the quality and scope of this tournament. We are convinced that you will be presented with an unforgettable event and share a wonderful experience with us. There are rarely events that bring people from so many different countries and cultures from all over the world. This is one of them.

Personally speaking, I have always found each international debate event to be unique in every aspect. Nowhere else can one find so much fun, experience, challenge, understanding, and friendship. May this tournament be something that remains in our minds and memories, and warms our hearts in the days to come.

The Young Elite Gavel Club, recognized by Toastmasters International, provides leadership and oratory training for teenagers under 18.

There are two sections: prepared speeches and table topics. Prepared speeches can last from 5-7 minutes, while table topics will last for 2 minutes. Speaking longer or shorter than set durations may lead to disqualification.

Dress code is formal (MUN-style). Shirt and trousers for men, dress for women.
