Li Po Chun United World College finally broke through to win a major Hong Kong debating trophy defeating South Island School in a pulsating final in the 5th HKSDC SENIOR tournament held at the stunning new campus of the Diocesan Girls’ School in Jordan on September 22 2012. In the packed DGS Recital Hall, a perfect venue for debating, in a split decision, propping the motion “THBT Disney should make a animated film with an openly gay protagonist”, LPC held their poise and nerve against a gallant opponent. In what judging panel chair, Mr Greg Forse, described as “the best ever HKSDC final” LPC proposed a positive social messaging position with Disney having “a moral obligation” to act whilst SIS countered with two major points: Disney stereotyping would damage the diverse nature of the true LGBT images, and that the company had more of an obligation as a commercial enterprise to shareholders than as a social engineer.

Earlier in the semi finals LPC defeated Maryknoll Convent School and SIS won against Chinese International School in two tightly contested semi-finals on the impromptu motion “THBT the consumer contributes more to society than the voter”. Only the top 4 teams broke after 3 rounds.

Austin Lee, who led LPC to victory in the final was crowned Best Speaker at the tournament with consistently high scores throughout the day.

Diocesan Girls’ School were magnificent hosts with Head Girl, Nat So, and her team of helpers contributing to the smooth flow and successful scheduling of the event. The work done by the DGS girls in timekeeping and chairing debates was outstanding – thanks very much to all of you because the day could not have worked so well without your generous support.
