RENAISSANCE TAKE GOLD IN EPIC FINAL FROM GALLANT DGS

Standard

It was a grand final of sublime quality that concluded the 8th Junior Debating Championships on 19 November 2013 with the much younger Proposition team from Diocesan Girls’ School challenging the more experienced hosts, Renaissance College, every millimetre of the way. The motion “This House should cease the USA drone programme” which many thought too difficult for this level of debater, proved to be the catalyst for an intriguing contest which saw research, strategy, rebuttal and style being matched speech for speech. In the end, it came down to the staying power of the hosts and a fine speaker-award delivery by Sarika at 3rd opposition that proved the difference.

The DGS girls, however, captivated the crowd with their skill and courage to earn a hearty round of applause when the silverware for first runner-up was handed out. They deserved it, too, because having arrived at the tournament 10 days before as DGS team 2, they went from uncertain students with not much experience to worthy finalists who contributed to the fireworks in what has been, to date, the best ever Junior Grand Final. This tournament marks the beginning of long debating careers for the members of this fine team.

Renaissance College put together a very classy finals night, dressing up the stage with colourful debating tables, slides and visual displays. The team of senior students ran the night with clockwork precision and added greatly to the sense of occasion.

The Silver, Bronze and Crystal Grand Finals all produced even contests and proved the value of the new format in giving all teams a chance to do finals debating. There is no doubt that all 6 teams who took part in these Grand Finals will come back to the 9th Junior event in March, 2014, stronger for their experiences.
