Team Hong Kong performed extremely well at the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships in Brisbane, Australia in 2011, collectively setting five national records. This was the first year that Hong Kong was invited to send 8 participants, that a team member broke into 3 finals, that a team member was selected to compete in the Grand Finals and that a team member became World Champion in one of the four disciplines. The highest overall individual ranking was also set. The team members were:

  • Ben Allen (La Salle College)
  • Heather Pickerell (German Swiss International School)
  • James Lo (Diocesan Boys’ School)
  • Griffith Cheng (Li Po Chun United World College)
  • Madhav Mennon (South Island School)
  • Raphael Leung (La Salle College)
  • Alan Gigi (South Island School)
  • Jennifer Chan (Marymount Secondary School)

Mr. Michael Evershed and Mr. Roy Allen accompanied the team to Brisbane.

Finals

The following team members made it into the finals (the top ten from each round) and their results are as follows:

  • Heather Pickerell – Persuasive Speaking (1st), Debating (joint 2nd), Impromptu (12th)
  • Benjamin Allen – Persuasive Speaking (10th) , Debating (joint 2nd)
  • James Lo – Interpretive Reading (14th)

Grand Finals

For the first time in the history of Hong Kong’s participation in WIDPSC, team members from Hong Kong were selected to compete in the Grand Finals of the tournament. These were:

  • Heather Pickerell – Persuasive Speaking, Debating
  • Benjamin Allen – Debating

Benjamin Allen ranked 2nd in debating and Heather Pickerell was the eventual World Champion of Persuasive Speaking and ranked 4th in debating.
